Sisters and brothers! You had no idea what you were doing! Climbing out of Death Valley on bicycles, through the desert and mountain passes, onward past Lone Pine toward Mt. Whitney—you had no idea how hard it would be, how crazy it would sound, how beautiful it was, or how many would follow you. You had no idea. But everything that has followed in the Agony Ride is based on your efforts, your guts, your faith.

Thirty Agony Rides later, $2,000,000 has been raised for Christian Encounter Ministries! You had no idea! You have inspired several hundred others to push the envelope; to go as far as, as fast as, as long as they could possibly go. This is the definition of inspiration!

We want to honor your contribution to the life of the ministry at this year’s Agony Ride, July 27-28, at Loyalton, California. All of you who attempted the route from the lowest to the highest point in the lower 48 in 1982-85 will be the special focus of the 30th Agony. None of you had an idea what you were doing—but you established and accomplished something of lasting value through your efforts. Now each year every single rider is cheered on by our current students and interns for 24 hours. Those you are serving are there serving you. It’s beautiful. Members of various and disparate parts of Christ’s Body encourage one another, ride together, and serve side by side, displaying a powerful example of Christian unity. These were the purposes that God had for you when you showed up at Badwater, Death Valley. He would take your sweat, your bruises, your thirst, and your hallucinations and create opportunities for His love to be demonstrated in a Jesus-like manner. Many CEM residents have seen how great His love is for them for first time at an Agony. Many riders have said it is the most spiritual moment of the year for them. You had no idea—but God did.

Please come to the 30th Agony Ride. You can sag or ride or just come for the food. You have earned it! We love you all and look forward to seeing you.
