Internship Alcohol and Tobacco Policy

Many of the students who come to Christian Encounter have had histories of substance abuse.  Because of this, they are often hyper-aware of others’ use, and in the past they have been able to detect when an intern has had even a very small amount of alcohol on a day off.

Many Bible passages speak to this situation, such as I Corinthians 8:9: “But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak” and I Corinthians 10:23-24 & 32-33: “‘All things are lawful,’ but not all things are helpful.  ‘All things are lawful,’ but not all things build up.  Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor….Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.”

These passages prompt us, as the students’ spiritual role models, to be extra vigilant in protecting them from stumbling—we do not in any way want to damage our influence with them.  Since many of their struggles and wounds have come from improper use of substances, both by themselves and by their families and friends, interns at Christian Encounter agree to abstain, for a time, in order to protect those we shepherd.  We are asking you to commit to abstaining from alcohol or tobacco use while interning at the Ranch.  This does not apply to vacation days when you will not be spending the night at the ranch.

If you have any questions about this or would like more background information, feel free to ask.
